Kali Audio LP-8 Second Wave V2 8-Inch Active Powered Studio Monitor, Black

Kali Audio's Lone Pine Series studio monitors are designed to allow you to hear every detail that's happening in your mix.

This starts with an exceptionally accurate frequency response. Whatever is present on your mix is what you'll hear in these monitors. Nothing is boosted or suppressed to cover flaws or try to sound more pleasing.

With the LP-8, you can mix with more confidence, and you can also be assured that your mix will translate as best as possible to whatever systems your audience is using.

The 2nd Wave goes even further, utilizing a more robust DSP for an even flatter frequency response on the top end.

LP-8:

  • 100W Class D Power
  • 37 Hz Lower Frequency Response
  • < 2.5% System THD 94 dB @ 1M
    117 dB Max SPL

Features

ACCURACY

The LPs have always been praised for their accuracy, and we’re pleased to share that the 2nd Wave versions realize slight but noticeable improvements in that regard, particularly on the top end.
Full resolution measurement data is available below. The data chart may be imported into REW for viewing.

POWER

Kali Audio defines a listening distance as the maximum distance at which the speakers can play continuously at 85 dB while maintaining 20 dB dynamic headroom.

This means that anywhere within that listening distance, you can listen for long periods of time at reference volume, and momentary peaks such as bass drops or explosion effects will come through clearly and with minimal distortion. LP-8 can handle larger setups easily. Full output specifications, along with maximum listening distances, can be found in our user’s manual.

Bass on the LP-Series monitors is delivered by larger magnets and larger voice coils than any comparable speakers on the market. This gives you more accurate bass response that extends lower, so you can dial in exactly the low end sound you need. Bass response is not boosted or overhyped, but you can be sure that you’re hearing the bass that you have on the track.

Protective limiters prevent harmful voltage from ever reaching the drivers, so there is no risk of blowing these speakers. These have been updated for the 2nd Wave, allowing for 3 dB higher output.

Both models use 40W for the 1” soft dome tweeter. the LP-8 uses 60W for the 8-Inch woofer.

EASE OF USE

Boundary EQ Control

A speaker’s given position in a space can drastically change it’s frequency response. A speaker placed against a wall or on a desk will sound very different than a speaker placed on a stand, even in a well-treated space. Hard surfaces like walls, desk tops, and recording consoles can change the low end frequency response of the monitor, and degrade the overall clarity of the sound.

Happily, most of the common positions are fairly predictable and easily corrected.

Kali’s team did our Boundary EQ tuning at The Village Studios in Los Angeles, and came up with boundary compensation EQ settings to help you get the optimum sound for where you need to put your speakers. For the 2nd Wave, the boundary EQs have been updated for using the speakers on a desk with monitor stands.

Combined with the LF and HF trims, this will ensure that the speakers sound their best no matter what room you’re mixing in, or where the speakers are placed.

Easy Connections

The LP-8 feature balanced XLR and TRS inputs, and an unbalanced RCA input.

The RCA input can be set to -10 dBu sensitivity when you’re using consumer devices like a laptop or smartphone’s headphone jack.

TECHNOLOGY

3-D Imaging Waveguide

The waveguide on the Lone Pine Series studio monitors ensures that the directivity of the loudspeaker is smooth throughout its frequency response. What’s more: it’s calibrated so that the sound power of the loudspeaker helps you to perceive sound accurately.

In practical terms, what this means is that you’re hearing spatial details in the recording that allow your brain to place elements of the recording in the space around you. This gives the speakers a more natural, lifelike feel that exposes more of the detail of the material that you’re working on. This level of detail makes it easier to make critical decisions, as well as making these monitors pleasurable to mix on and listen to in general.

Low Noise Port Tube

We wanted to put a port on the front of the LP-Series studio monitors so that they could be used in small spaces where they’d be placed against walls. At the same time, we didn’t want noise from the front port to distract from the accuracy of the speaker, so we developed a special front port that doesn’t make noise.

On most port tubes, air leaves at different speeds from different points of the opening, creating noisy turbulence. This turbulence can be heard as “chuffing,” or an audible air sound coming from the monitor. This sound will add to the noise floor and obscure the details of the low end.

Kali Audio WS-6.2 Dual 6-Inch Powered Studio Subwoofer

The WS-6.2 is a studio subwoofer with 2 x 6.5-Inch high excursion woofers. Designed to be both powerful and small, the WS-6.2 takes up less than half as much space as comparably performing subwoofers. Despite its diminutive form factor, it is capable of 120 dB max SPL and
27 Hz lower frequency response.

The woofers are horizontally opposed, meaning that there is no net vibration from the subwoofer. A built-in 80 Hz high-passed output makes it ideal for pairing with most popular studio monitors, including Kali’s LP- and IN-Series monitors. A footswitch jack allows users to bypass both the sub and the crossover so they can hear their mix on their full range speakers. Footswitches are sold separately, but a number of inexpensive options are available at every music retailer.

In addition to the 80 Hz crossover, the subwoofer can be set for LFE mode or be used with an external crossover. Polarity may also be reversed if necessary.

Like all of Kali’s speakers, the WS-6.2 uses a unique port tube that virtually eliminates chuffing and port compression, allowing for clear, powerful bass with minimal distortion.

FEATURES

  • The W2-6.2 takes up slightly more than one cubic foot. It is about the same size as most 8-inch studio monitors, or about half as large as comparably performing subwoofers. This makes it ideal for use under your desk, or in other positions where space is at a premium.
  • The WS-6.2 uses two horizontally opposed 6.5-Inch high-excursion woofers. The movement of the two woofers cancel each other out, giving you deep, clear, powerful bass without any vibration. A lack of vibration means that the subwoofer won’t scoot across the floor, and it won’t cause objects it might be touching to rattle or buzz. Using two woofers allows the WS-6.2 to have output similar to a subwoofer with a 10-inch driver while taking up far less space.
  • Despite its diminutive size, the WS-6.2 is capable of 120 dB max SPL, and lower frequency extension down to 27 Hz. This makes it an ideal companion to almost any set of stereo studio monitors. With the LFE crossover, the WS-6.2 can be used on its own in small multichannel setups. For medium sized setups, including immersive mixing applications, another subwoofer can be added without breaking the bank.
  • The WS-6.2 features 80 Hz, LFE, and External Crossover modes. The 80 Hz crossover mode is engineered to work with Kali’s full-range monitors, but it will also pair well with full range monitors from most popular manufacturers. LFE mode turns the outputs off, and low passes the sub at 120 Hz. This allows the sub to be used as the .1 channel in configurations like 5.1 or Atmos. For users wanting more flexibility, the external crossover mode turns the crossover off entirely.
  • The WS-6.2 can accept XLR, TRS, or RCA input, so you can plug whatever gear you’re already using into the WS-6.2. Output to full range monitors is provided via XLR.
  • A footswitch jack allows users to bypass both the sub and the crossover so they can hear their mix on their full range speakers. Footswitches are sold separately, but a number of inexpensive options are available at every music retailer.
  • Depending on the shape and size of your room, the position of the subwoofer relative to the monitors, and your listening position relative to all of those factors, the subwoofer may sum better with the monitors with the polarity reversed.
  • On most port tubes, air leaves at different speeds from different points of the opening, creating noisy turbulence. This turbulence can be heard as "chuffing," or an audible air sound coming from the system. This sound will add to the noise floor and obscure the details of the low end. The port tube on the WS-6.2 was designed to ensure that all of the air leaves the port tube at the same velocity. This helps add to the low end response of the subwoofer, while keeping the bass clean, tight, and devoid of extra noise.
